OK Labs, Citrix team on mobile virtual desktop Bernard Cole Chicago, Ill. -- Embedded virtualization software provider Open Kernel Labs Inc. has teamed up with Citrix Inc. to promote the design of smart phones that can serve as mobile virtual desktops, recreating by remote access the desktop work environment. The first step is the introduction of their "Nirvana phone" reference architecture and currently they are moving to the next step: working with silicon and operating system providers, handset builders and network operators to build the appropriate supportive "ecosystem" so that such mobile virtual desktop smartphones will be available within the next 12 to 18 months. Building on the expertise of Citrix and their remote desktop platform, the Nirvana platform would allow users to access their corporate virtual desktop and applications from a single device, in any location. Nirvana also offers support for docking to full-sized displays, keyboards, mice and other PC-type peripherals in an idea Open Kernel Labs calls Mobile to Enterprise, or M2E. Citrix has contributed its desktop virtualization and Open Kernel Labs the OKL4 mobile virtualization software. The Nirvana phone reference includes 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth communications and emerging mobile phone capabilities such as video and high-definition output. The operating system candidates include Android, other Linux distributions, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Symbian. To learn more, go to www.ok-labs.com or www.citrix.com.
