TV makers plan Linux-based Internet TV specs

TOKYO - Five Japanese TV manufacturers will form a working group to hammer out technical specifications by October for digital TVs with Internet access.

Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Sharp Corp., Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. are leading the effort to define the connection between digital TV's and the Internet. They will launch the working group on April 14 to prepare a common platform for digital TV sets net access. Though Internet TVs have failed in the past, the five companies said they intend to position the digital TV set as a home information center.

Matsushtia and Sony agreed last December to collaborate in developing an enhanced version of Linux for digital consumer electronics products. The two companies will develop a consumer electronics version of Linux to provide functions and performance required for digital products. The resulting source code will be made available through the General Public License procedure.

As a result of the joint effort, the working group is expected to adopt Linux as the operating system for its TV-Internet connection specification.

Other manufacturers will be invited to participated, Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Pioneer Corp. Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. and Victor Company of Japan Ltd. have endorsed the efforts are expected to join the group.
