Turku, Finland and Munich, Germany - Viola Systems and EBV Elektronik have jointly rolled out the first commercial quality open source implementation of common internet protocols for embedded
devices.
Called OpenTCP, the open source stack is designed to allow Internet connectivity
to be added to a variety of
inexpensive 16- and even 8-bit microcontrollers. Viola and EBV will offer
OpenTCP as a part of their product portfolios.
To support the adoption of the OpenTCP, the companies will also offer professional
support services and reference material such as design schematics and hardware
starter kit boards.
"There is an increasing need on the market to remotely monitor and manage
different types of devices and machines over the Internet, " said Jari Lahti
the developer of OpenTCP and CTO of Viola Systems. Originally developed by
Viola Systems, the OpenTCP was recently released to the open source community
(www.opentcp.org). Initially, the efforts
of the OpenTCP community will concentrate on porting the software to various
platforms and extending its network management and security
properties. Development will be overseen and coordinated by Viola Systems.
OpenTCP is available under a BSD-style open source/free software license.
The software currently works with Fujitsu's 16-bit series of microcontrollers
and includes protocols such as ARP, IPv4, ICMP, UDP, TCP, HTTP, BOOTP, TFTP,
POP3 and SMTP.
