Santa Clara, Ca. -- As part of its effort to support the use of  Linux  in a broad range of Internet-centric appliances ranging fromservers to small footprint computing devices such as PDAs and Web-enabled cell phones, Intel Corp. has ported its VTune Performance Analyzer -- long a staple in Windows applications -- to the open source operating system.
The Intel VTune Performance Analyzer for Linux 1.0 identifies lines of code in an application that consume excessive amounts of processor resources. Developers can use this analysis to quickly identify and remove potential performance bottlenecks by focusing on those specific lines of code, resulting in faster time to market with new applications. Types of applications that can achieve enhanced performance include commercial, transaction-oriented computing, computationally intensive financial, engineering and scientific applications, digital media, games and multimedia.

The company has also made available under Linux its Performance Analyzer Driver Kit, allowing developers to use the tool with unsupported Linux distributions and customized kernels. "

Previously only available in the Windows version, the Linux implementation of the VTune allows use through a  command line interface, new scripting capability, and "flow of control" analysis. The new tool features a Pack and Go option wherein the results from the Linux server can be transferred back to a Windows-based system for further analysis with the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 6.1.

Available next month, the tools is priced at $699. Go  to www.intel.com/software/products for information on this product.
