NEW YORK - To support the development of handheld devices running Linux, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Metrowerks have created the OpenPDA Linux-based software platform for personal digital assistants and smart phones based on AMD's Alchemy Solutions Mobile Client reference design kit. The companies demonstrated a pre-release version of OpenPDA at LinuxWorld here.

The Mobile Client design kit is an evaluation and benchmark platform that utilizes AMD's Alchemy Au1100 processor. The kit is for designers writing such applications as multimedia player, games, voice recording systems, image viewers and other systems, the companies said. OpenPDA also includes a software suite that includes a calendar, contact list, to-do list, e-mail and text editor programs.

The platform includes an embedded Linux kernel, Trolltech AS' Qtopia multi-language user interface, Insignia Solutions Inc.'s integrated Java Virtual Machine and Opera Software's Web browser.

AMD's Au1100 system-on-chip processor runs the MIPS32 instruction set and includes on-chip SDRAM; SRAM, flash and EPROM controllers; an LCD controller; a 10/100 Ethernet controller; USB device and host; AC-97 controller; and two secure digital ports. Metrowerks will release OpenPDA later this quarter.
