Ubicom MCU Supports Wireless Distribution System

Mountain View, Ca. -- Working with Agere Systems, Ubicom, Inc. has added support for repeater functionality to its platform software-driven IP2022 network processing microcontroller including support for Agere's implementation of the  Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

WDS functionality wirelessly extends the transmission distance of a signal, bridging wireless clients to a main access point. As a result, users can expand the coverage of their wireless network without having to pull costly wiring, which can total as much as $1,000 per node. While some wireless suppliers offer WDS support today, it is only available as an integrated feature on expensive access points. According to Bulent Celebi, president and CEO, because the IP2022 incorporates this functionality on-chip in the form of a software-based SOC peripheral it can lower the cost of purely wireless, stand-alone repeater access points to  less than half the cost of competitive solutions.

WDS allows a repeater access point to act as a wireless bridge between a main access point and multiple wireless clients. As implemented in the Ubicom network microcontroller, users can specify up to six high-performance wireless links. Celebi said that benchmark tests show that repeater access points designed using the platform consistently outperform solutions from some of the industry's leading wireless access point providers. For instance, TCP/IP throughput is 1.40 Mbps between a client and an access point going over two Ubicom repeaters (3 hops), compared to 1.33 Mbps for two access points from another leading provider. The solution is compatible with chipsets from Agere.

WDS functionality has been added to Ubicom's IP2022 Advanced Wireless Kit. Existing customers can upgrade to the new kit for no additional charge. New customers can purchase the kit now for $9,995.
