Nomadix unveils "HotSpot" mobile network gatewayBy Bernard Cole
According to research firm Analysys, the number of commercial HotSpots is expected to grow to over 41,000 in the United States by 2007.
The Nomadix HotSpot Gateway is designed to provide broadband Internet connectivity for up to 25 simultaneous visitors. It enables Global Roaming so users can transparently move between different networks while retaining one billing relationship with their chosen provider.
The Nomadix gateway is a 1U high device that employs one fast Ethernet port to interface with the router (network side) and two fast Ethernet ports to interface with the aggregation equipment (subscriber side) within the HotSpot. It uses the company's proprietary Dynamic Address Translation(DAT) technology to provide transparent and seamless broadband connectivity to any user at any location, without the need for configuration changes to the client computer or any resident client-side software.
The gateway device features a Home Page Redirect (HPR) function that intercepts the home page setting of the user's browser and redirects it to a predetermined portal page. It also allows hot spot operators or service providers to create a "walled garden" enabling users to only access certain predetermined Web sites, services or applications before they have been authenticated.
The gateway system the company has developed makes use of browser-based authentication, by which secure network access for the mobile user is enabled via a standard Web browser supporting the Universal Access Method (UAM). This allows any IP-based device to login and be authenticated.
It also simultaneously supports Port-based Authentication using IEEE 802.1x, browser based models, and Smart Clients from companies such as Boingo Wireless, GRIC and iPass.
The Nomadix HotSpot Gateway is available now and is priced at $1,995.
