EverPad

by Veronica Hendricks

Some say that Web tablets, or more powerful versions of what we now call Web tablets, are going to replace laptop computers in the near future. If that is the case, then the EverPad from Everex is a move in the right direction. Boosting up processing power to a 500 MHz Transmeta Crusoe processor, instead of the 206 MHz Intel processors that are usually in such devices, gives the EverPad a definite edge.

EverPad

The EverPad is aimed at OEMs and vertical markets, giving industry workers the ability to work efficiently and stay connected while mobile. Software like MS Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket PowerPoint, Pocket Outlook, Pocket Internet Explorer 4.0, and Windows Media Player are helpful applications that allow users to closely mimic their desktop work. The EverPad is pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows CE 3.0, but Midori Mobile Linux is also an option -- one that may hinder running the MS Pocket software programs, though.

Interfacing with the EverPad is typical of Web tablets, with the ability to input data via a touchscreen and stylus in addition to a resizeable soft keyboard. A speaker and microphone are also built in for verbal dictation. Adding peripherals is made easier through two USB ports, a PCMCIA Type II slot, a CompactFlash Type II card, and IrDA. For those who require more memory, it also can support a 1 GB microdrive. If you would like to add wireless capabilities, the EverPad will support an 802.11b card in the PC Card slot.

The display consists of an 8.4 inch TFT screen with a resolution of 800 x 600. The 16-bit color screen can be set for viewing in portrait or landscape mode.

The EverPad measures 10.57 x 6.29 x 1.02 inches and weighs 2.64 lbs.

Pricing and Availability

The EverPad will be available to OEMs in Q1 2002. Pricing will be available from Everex upon request.
