A somewhat non-traditional iteration of a Web tablet, the TouchPC Voyager places its 6-inch color display (a 5.5-inch half-VGA monochrome display is optional) on a more handheld-looking, ergonomic frame. The functionality of this Web tablet can be found encased in a rugged polycarbonate shell measuring 8.6 x 5.8 x 2.75 inches. ![]() The theory behind having a rugged device with a large screen is that individuals out in the field, who can't really operate "fragile" equipment, usually don't have the time to remove their gloves and grab a small stylus to begin adding data. Of course, it is a touchscreen device, with SofTriggers located on the side of the unit, so workers can easily scan or print receipts from the TouchPC. So that is the physical the device, but how about the brains behind the braun? Well, it runs a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, which isn't too shabby, and it's packed with 64 MB of RAM and 32 MB of flash. If you require more memory than that, it has both a CompactFlash slot and a PC Card slot. Connectivity is handled via three serial ports, IrDA, and an Ethernet port. If you would like to communicate wirelessly with the TouchPC, your options include RFLAN, 802.11b, Mobitex, DataTac, GSM, CDMA, CDPD, and Bluetooth. As for adding functionality, the TouchPC has a rather unique solution: the hot swappable EndCap. With this device, you can select up to five options from a group containing receipt and label printers, laser scanners, RFID tag readers, and wireless modems, among others, to create a custom EndCap for your specific requirements. Pricing and Availability The TouchPC Voyager is currently available to OEMs. (For access to more than 4,500 other hands-on product reviews on all variety of wired and wireless appliance and consumer devices, go to the iAppliance Web Portal Page. )
