Here is another option for mobile work managers to contemplate: the MX3-CE from LEX. The MX3-CE is a Windows CE 3.0-based rugged mobile computing device with an Ingress Protection rating of 66. It uses a touchscreen interface and offers a high level of usability, as it can double as a handheld device or as a half-VGA horizontal form factor vehicle-mounted unit. The device's docking system allows for either use. ![]() To communicate with other devices or networks, the MX3-CE has integrated barcode reader technology, along with radio frequency WAN or LAN communications support. A CompactFlash card slot and a PCMCIA card slot allow for additional radio card support, including 802.11b or Open-Air wireless. The MX3-CE also has RS-232 and USB ports, as well as a headset and microphone jack. But all of the ruggedness and connectivity is only as good as the technology it supports or houses. This is the same old case of "it's what's inside that counts." Well, for mobile workers, since playing MP3s and MPEGs aren't of vital importance, mobile devices such as these can get away with a bit less and still package the necessary performance. The MX3-CE houses a 133 MHz Intel SA-1110 and gives users about 32 MB SDRAM and 16 MB Flash memory. As such, the touchscreen display is utilitarian, not flashy. The 640 x 240 resolution LCD is 16 grayscale, but gives viewers about 6 inches of diagonal space to look at. In addition to the touchscreen, workers can use the 63 key QWERTY keyboard, which is made of glow-in-the-dark phosphorescent keypads, eliminating the need for backlighting. The MX3-CE measures 8 x 6 x 1.35 inches and weighs 30.8 oz, including the radio, internal 1400 mAh Lithium-ion battery, and scanner. Because software applications for such devices are usually dictated by the particular industry use, the only standard software on the MX3-CE is Windows CE 3.0 and MS Explorer. Pricing and Availability The MX3-CE is currently available. Contact LXE resellers for pricing information.
