Psion Teklogix netpad

by Veronica Hendricks

For devices to work well for field data collection, delivery, mobile sales, repair services, and the like, they must be lightweight, ergonomic, and powerful. The netpad from Psion Teklogix has tried to be all of these things. The tablet has an Ingress Protection rating of 67, which represents the extent to which the device resists solids and liquids, a fairly high rating for a handheld device. This allows workers to compute come rain, sleet, snow, windstorm, or shine.

Psion Teklogix netpad

The netpad measures 8.47 x 3.35 x 0.99 inches and weighs 1.12 lbs, including the 875 mAh Lithium-Ion battery that supplies 8 to 10 hours of use. Because it is designed for vertical markets, it comes with minimal software included, so it can be customized for particular industries. The netpad comes installed with the Symbian OS in flash ROM, but this is upgradeable. It is also set up to support Java applications and has an OPL programming interface, PC Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows NT/95/98 C++, and Native SDK. If you like, your netpad can be shipped with Word, Sheet, Time, Alarms, Calculator, and Voice Recorder applications. It supports SMTP, Internet POP3 and IMAP4 email, HTML 3.2, HTTP 1.1, Frames, Java Applets, Java Script, SSL, and GIF and JPEG graphics formats.

On the inside, the netpad runs on a 206 MHz Intel SA-1110 Strong ARM processor, equipped with 16 MB SDRAM and 16 MB flash ROM. Additional data storage comes by way of an MMC card slot. To sync up or connect to other devices, the netpad supports IrDA transmission and RS232 serial connections. Psion Teklogix also supplies a range of Docking Modules and Battery Chargers for the netpad.

The high-quality half-VGA size display features 640 x 240 pixels and 256 colors. You can even switch from portrait to landscape mode to view your data in the most appropriate format. For data input, you can use the soft keyboard on the screen or the included pointing device for the touchscreen.
