The InstaGate EX is a box, measuring 11.8 x 12.2 x 3.5 in. and weighing 10.8 lbs. But it is what's inside the box that counts. Those are the components that will make your virtual private network secure -- almost bulletproof. ![]() Firewall capabilities include web authentication and access control, network address translation (NAT), stateful packet filtering, VPN forwarding, transparent HTTP proxy server/cache, and prevention of spoofing, scanning, and denial of service attacks. Besides being a basic firewall, the InstaGate includes a range of integrated LAN tools, like email, file and print servers. These services, and the number of user licenses you have (25, 50, 100, or 250), can be added as you need them. It connects to the Internet using a DSL, cable modem, EuroISDN, or POTS Internet connection. You can conduct setup and management via a web-browser interface. When it comes time for you to upgrade the services, you can use your Internet connection to download SoftPaks, their version of service, application, and upgrade programs. Connection to your network is established via 2 DB-9 RS-232 serial ports. The InstaGate runs on a 500MHz processor, and has 64MB of RAM, which is upgradeable to 512MB. The hard disk drive is 10.2 GB, sufficient for a small-to-medium-sized business. It uses Red Hat 6.1 and the Linux 2.1 kernel.
