The SPT 1700 series of devices from Symbol Technologies incorporates wireless WAN access, so these PDAs not only let you collect and manage data, but they allow you to access the Internet and your corporate LANs to send and receive email and communicate with remote systems, as well. ![]() Based on the Palm OS 3.5, which allows it to support Palm-compatible enterprise and synchronization software, the SPT 1733/1734 devices come wireless-ready, the 1733 with a Novatel CDPD modem, and the 1734 with 900/1800 MHz dual band capabilities for GSM networks. But these devices aren't meant only to connect to the Internet. They fall under the "Extreme Environments" category of products for Symbol, which means that they are sealed for protection against windblown rain and dust, and can stand up to several drops to the concrete from up to 4 feet. Industrial in nature, the 1733/1734 comes with a minature scan engine, which allows a mobile worker to capture bar coded data in sunlight or bright artificial light. The SPT 1733/1734 runs on a Motorola DragonBall processor, and offers 4 MB of ROM and 8 MB of RAM. For viewing all of that important data, you'll rest your eyes on a high contrast, anti-reflective 160 x 160 LCD screen. Larger than a typical PDA, the SPT 1733/1734 measures 1 x 3.625 x 7 inches, and weighs 11.8 oz. So it's a bit heavier, but when the device plans for you to drop it anyway, what is the difference? Pricing and Availability The Symbol SPT 1733/1734 is currently available for $1600.00 (For access to more than 4,500 other hands-on product reviews on all variety of wired and wireless appliance and consumer devices, go to the iAppliance Web Portal Page. )
