Actiontec Wireless-Ready Multimedia Home GatewayActiontec's Wireless-Ready Multimedia Home Gateway provides wireless connectivity, security, and management for home networks, except for the fact that the wireless part isn't all there. It dedicates a PCMCIA slot for add-on wireless PC cards supporting the 802.11b and 802.11a technologies. The support for 802.11a is what really puts the multimedia in the Wireless-Ready Multimedia Home Gateway. 802.11a is fast enough at 56Mbps and has enough reliability to keep pace when transferring high-bandwidth video data. ![]()
The gateway's main functions are to provide Internet access, wireless connectivity, security, and network management. Internet access is through a 10BaseT RJ45 Ethernet port that connects to broadband DSL or cable modems. Wireless connectivity is accomplished through wireless add-on cards. LAN connectivity can also be established through 4 auto-sensing Ethernet switches at speeds up to 100Mbps. Altogether the gateway can service up to 35 client devices. Network security is included to ensure privacy and to prevent external hacking and viruses from damaging systems. Actiontec's gateway uses Network Address Translation (NAT), Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and a firewall to protect the network. The firewall is used to block unwanted network services and to track Internet usage to monitor users' activities. NAT is used to hide computer systems from hackers. Finally, VPNs provide a secure private mechanism for communications across the Web. The gateway has a built-in Web server for Web-based management. The system is configured through Web pages that are viewable through standard browsers such as IE or Netscape Navigator. Password authentication is required to access these pages. NAT, DNS, and DHCP work together to manage the network by providing virtual IP addresses to client devices on the network. These services are configured through the Web-based management console. Other PC cards can be added to the gateway to provide networking support for HomePNA or Bluetooth devices. The gateway also offers POP3 and SMTP functionality to deliver email. Telnet is included for remote access by service providers for technical support, diagnostics, and firmware upgrades. Pricing and Availability The Wireless-Ready Multimedia Home Gateway is available for $129.95.
