Nowadays, always-on broadband Internet connections aren't a perk, they're a must, especially if you're running a business. Exciting as this connection is, you can't get caught up in the thrill of being able to go online at any time, or being able to access network files from your home. You need to be responsible about your connection, and make sure you have enough security to keep your network files safe from hackers. ![]() Devices like the SonicWALL SOHO2 exist just to help you do that. The SOHO2 runs a proprietary RTOS, and since it sits outside your immediate network, there aren't that many operating systems that it won't work with nicely. What this means is that it doesn't matter if you're running NT or Linux, the SOHO2 is up to the challenge of protecting your network. The SOHO2 incorporates Network Address Translation (NAT), so all of the computers living in your LAN can access the Internet through a single IP address. A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server and Client allow you to have centralized management of IP addressing, along with the ability to receive a dynamically assigned IP address from your ISP. And DSL users, don't worry, it also supports Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE). The 8.25 x 6.5 x 2 inch SOHO2 runs on a Toshiba TX3927 processor and is equipped with 8 MB RAM and 3 MB flash. The SOHO2 is also based on a high-performance 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet platform, so rest assured your network won't be slowed down. Speaking of network support, the SOHO2 has a 10/100 Base-T auto-sensing WAN interface and a 10/100 Base-T auto-sensing LAN interface. Ethernet LEDs will notify you of the status of your link and network activity. So what does this device do for your network, exactly? Well, besides providing firewall security using stateful packet inspection to prevent Denial of Service attacks and hackers in general, the SOHO2 comes with Internet content filtering and AutoUpdate capabilities. These AutoUpdates include free automatic firmware updates for the life of the product. Optional feature upgrades of the SOHO2 include IPSec Virtual Private Networking, network anti-virus, and authentication service. Pricing and Availability The SonicWALL SOHO2 10-user version is available for $495, and the 50-user version is available for $995.
