To keep network users happy, they need to have reliable, secure access to all of the network resources. In the past, this was a complex situation plagued by the question: how can you share printers, Internet connections, and files across a network of computers that may or may not be running the same operating system, or even working on the same platform? Oh, and don't forget that security thing, too. Well, with devices like the UGate-3300, networking and security capabilities have been married in one simple package. ![]() The UGate-3300 is a second-generation high-speed wireless Internet sharing gateway and NAT firewall with added wireless capabilities and a built-in print server. A 1-port 10/100 auto-sense switch allows users to network and access the Internet quickly with little effort. Designed for workgroups of up to 253 users, the UGate-3300 allows users to access the Internet simultaneously through a single Cable or xDSL modem account. And since it uses a TCP/IP protocol, Macs, PCs, or even Linux-based machines can share the Internet with this device. Managing the device is as easy as pulling up a browser. Yes, you can control it all through a standard Internet browser. Wireless networking with the UGate-3300 is achieved through 802.11b technology. Data transmission speeds can be 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps at maximum distances of 250 feet in a closed area or 1000 feet in an open or outdoor area. For landline networking, a 10/100 Base TX RJ45 port and 10/100 Uplink RJ45 port are dedicated to LAN, and a 10 BaseT Cable/ADSL modem RJ45 port is dedicated to WAN. For print sharing, the UGate-3300 is equipped with a DB-25 parallel printer port. For remote networking, the UGate-3300 comes with PPTP and IPSec pass-through support. And to address that security issue, it has NAT 64 and 128-bit WEP Encryption support and block access based on service port and/or URL. The UGate-3300 also supports Dynamic Domain Name Service, TCP/IP, DHCP server, DHCP client, and PPPoE. For Internet sharing services, it supports Windows, Mac OS 7.6.1 and later, Unix, Netware, and Lantastic. For print sharing services, it supports Windows NT, 98, 95, Me, and 2000. The UGate-3300 weighs 2.0 lbs and measures 9.75 x 8.25 x 1.25 inches. Pricing and Availability The UGate-3300 is currently available for around $220.
